Freewheelin Tours and its owner/operator Ian Seymour have, for the past ten years shown both Australian and International visitors the best of South Australia in a fun and informative way. Join us on a four or eight day tour of the Flinders Ranges in a deluxe air conditioned minibus.

Outback and Beyond 8 Day Tour – BH8

Explore all the major attractions and the backtracks of the spectacular Flinders Ranges and the legendary outback town of Broken Hill. Discover the magnificent gorges of the Flinders Ranges, the ‘Mad Max’ surreal landscape of Broken Hill. Travel through remote National Parks while following some of Australia’s major rivers. Spend one night underground in an outback opal mining town.

. Day One – Depart Adelaide and travel up to the great wine producing area of the Clare Valley for wine tasting at one of the local vineyards. Follow the Southern Flinders Ranges with short stops at the historic old towns of Melrose and Quorn. We follow the abandoned ‘old Ghan’ rail line to the Aboriginal sites of Death Rock and the Yourambulla Cave Paintings. A photo stop at the ruins of Kanyaka Homestead and a short drive gets us to our accommodation for the next two nights in a working sheep station.

. Day Two – Today we tour the Wilpena Pound and its surrounding gorges. A morning drive along the scenic Morolana Drive gets us to Wilpena Pound. Here there is a chance for a bushwalk with a range of walks available to suit all degrees of fitness. There is time for an optional scenic flight over the Pound. The afternoon is spent driving, with short walks, through Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges famous for their spectacular scenery and pre-Cambrian fossils. A stop at the lonely pub in Parachilna (population seven, maybe!) and we drive back to the sheep station.

. Day Three – An early start gets us on the road to Broken Hill with short stops and a picnic lunch we will arrive in Broken Hill for an orientation tour and a stop at the tourist information centre. At sunset we drive to the Sculpture Park for the colourful and sweeping views over the surrounding plains. Accommodation for the next three nights is motel style.

. Day Four – We explore the local attractions with an optional underground tour of the old BHP mine followed by a trip to the truly surreal Silverton area, a small old mining town now taken over by artists and very often by film crews. The day finishes with an optional Daydream Mine Tour and the Mundi Mundi Plains Lookout Umberumberka Dam.

. Day Five – Today is a ‘free’ day in Broken Hill. A bus will be available throughout the day to transport you between your chosen activities.

. Day Six – Depart Broken Hill for the White Cliffs Opal Fields. The afternoon is spent looking over the surrounding area. Accommodation is at the local underground motel. An evening trip out into the desert for some stargazing can be arranged, conditions permitting.

. Day Seven – Depart White Cliffs and travel south through Medindee Lakes and Kinchega National Park following the Darling River to arrive at Mungo National Park. Now a dry barren place it was once a lush tropical paradise and home of one of the earliest Aboriginal settlements in Australia. Accommodation in cabins.

. Day Eight – After leaving Lake Mungo National Park we continue on following the Darling River until it reaches its junction at Mildura with the biggest river in Australia, the Mighty Murray River as it is known. We follow the Murray River into the Barossa Valley and, if time permits, a taste of the local product at one of the many premium wineries in this famous area. Arrival in Adelaide and drop off at your accommodation should be around 1800.

Flinders Ranges Experience 4 Day Tour – FR4

Take a short break exploring the rugged Wilpena Pound area of the Central Flinders Ranges while staying at a working sheep station for three nights.
Brilliant colours, deep gorges, outback towns and spectacular scenery make this a nature lovers paradise and a photographers dream.

. Day One – Depart Adelaide at 0800 and travel up through rolling farmland to the wine growing area of the Clare Valley. After a stop here for a wine tasting at one of the local wineries we follow the Southern Flinders Ranges through the historic towns of Melrose and Wilmington. A short break at the old railway town of Quorn and we follow the abandoned old Ghan rail line stopping to look at aboriginal sites of Death Rock and Yourambulla cave paintings. Then it’s a photo stop at the ruins of Kanyaka Sheep Station and a short drive to our accommodation.

. Day Two – Today is spent in the Wilpena Pound area. We start with a drive along the Moralana Scenic drive with views of the southern wall of Wilpena Pound and vistas of the Elder, Druid and Chace Ranges. A chance to bushwalk the Pound is next with a range of walks to suit all degrees of fitness. A variety of optional activities are on offer here including scenic flights, horse riding, four wheel drive vehicle tours and Aboriginal guided tours.

. Day Three – We explore the areas to the north of Wilpena. Taking in the spectacular Brachina Gorge, famous for its pre-Cambrian fossils, Bunyeroo Gorge and Parachilna Gorge. Time is also allowed to have a look at the old Copper Mines and the unique pub in Blinman (population 15 on a good day!). We finish the day with a visit to Parachilna Pub and old rail siding (population seven on a very good day!).

. Day Four – An early departure from the sheep station and we make our way back to Adelaide via the old Copper mining township of Burra which was the richest mine in the world during the late 1800’s. On the way we pass through another almost deserted town of Terowie, which claims to be the place where General Douglas McArthur proclaimed ‘He would return’ during the Second World War. With time permitting we can drive back through the famous wine area of the Barossa Valley from where it is an hours drive to Adelaide.
