Flinders Ranges Cultural Experience 5 Day Tour – BTCS04
Escape to the spectacular Flinders Ranges in South Australia for a relaxing holiday with a unique Aboriginal cultural experience. Join Haydyn on a trip into his traditional homelands and share a culture over 40,000 years old. Listen to Adnyamathanha creation stories at traditional significant sites and see ancient paintings and engravings. Learn about the history of the area in the beautiful Ranges landscape with rugged mountains, scenic gorges, ruins of early settlement and abundant wildlife.
. Day One – Travel to the Northern Flinders Ranges, pass through historic towns and experience diverse landscape and the vastness of the outback. Morning tea at the foreshore and visit Wadlata Outback Centre in Port Augusta for hands on interpretive displays about the history and culture of the Flinders Ranges. Lunch at Wadlata Outback Centre. Visit the famous Prairie Hotel at Parachilna for an afternoon drink. Pass through the outback towns of Leigh Creek and Copley. Dinner at Iga Warta and taste traditional foods such as kangaroo and quandong. Retire to Iga Warta’s safari tent and awaken to a beautiful sunrise and view of the mountains.
. Day Two – Enjoy a morning tour to Red Gorge and take a walk through the spectacular trade route of Red Gorge and see Aboriginal engravings. Relax in the tranquil surroundings for morning tea. Tour to Mineruta and learn about the social history of the Adnyamathanha people told at Ram Paddock Gate. In the afternoon we go to Malkii Cave. Take a scenic walk through a creek bed to see ancient Aboriginal cave paintings and hear interpretations and an Adnyamathanha Dreaming story. Return to Iga Warta to take a walk or swim in the pool or just relax in the peaceful surroundings. Campfire Evening with Iga Warta hosts – a night around the campfire with music, Adnyamathanha Yura Muda (stories), and traditionally cooked damper.
. Day Three – Continental breakfast at Iga Warta and then check out. Today we take a tour to the Ochre Pits to see the colours of ochre and learn about its traditional uses. Morning tea in Main Creek – Billy tea and damper. Pass through Nepabunna, Ithala Awi (Italowie Gap) and visit (time permitting) Balcanoona Ranger Headquarters. Tour and lunch at Mount Chambers Gorge where you will see ancient Aboriginal engravings and hear a creation story that explains the geographical features in the area. In the afternoon we take a scenic drive through Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges on the way to Wilpena Pound Resort. View the magnificent geological rock formation and see Yellow-footed Rock Wallabies and other wildlife. Dinner at the Wilpena Pound Resort Restaurant and retire to the Resorts deluxe accommodation.

Day Four – This morning you can choose from these two options; Option one – Take a relaxing and peaceful walk and follow a beautiful creek to Wangarra lookout for a spectacular view inside Wilpena Pound. Morning tea en route (two hour return walk). Option two – Take a 20 minute Wilpena scenic flight for a birds eye view of Wilpena Pound and the Ranges. Extra charge AUD80.00 per person, minimum two people. Bookings essential. Lunch at Wilpena Pound Resort restaurant. After lunch take a tour of Old Wilpena Station. Taking in the ‘Living With Land’ interpretative trail where you will gain insight into isolated pastoral settlement life (one or two hours return walk). Return to Wilpena to relax, have a swim or visit the information centre. Dinner at the Wilpena Pound Resort Restaurant.

Then continue the journey on to Wilpena Pound Resort with leisure time for a scenic flight over the ranges, a walk, visit the Information Centre, a drink at the bar or a swim. Dine at the Wilpena Pound Resort Restaurant before retiring in the deluxe Wilpena Pound Resort accommodation.

Day Two – Enjoy a full buffet breakfast at the restaurant before venturing to Mount Chambers Gorge to see ancient Aboriginal engravings and hear a creation story that explains geographical features in the area. Break for morning tea en route including campfire, Billy tea and damper (weather permitting). Have a picnic lunch at Mount Chambers and listen to a social history talk about the Adnyamathanha people who are the local Aboriginal land custodians. Head back to Wilpena via Parachilna Gorge to the famous Prairie Hotel at Parachilna for an afternoon drink. Then continue the gorge tour back through the scenic Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges to view the magnificent geological formations and look for Yellow-footed Rock Wallabies and other wildlife. In the afternoon we go to Malkii Cave. Take a scenic walk through a creek bed to see ancient Aboriginal cave paintings that have been dated as 35,000 years old, and hear interpretations and an Adnyamathanha Dreaming story. Dinner at Iga Warta. Campfire Evening with Iga Warta hosts – a night around the campfire with music, Adnyamathanha Yura Muda (stories), and traditionally cooked damper with urti (quandong) jam.

. Day Four – Tour of Nepabunna Aboriginal Community and visit their native food garden. Morning tea at Ithala Awi (Italowie Gap) in the Gammon Ranges National Park. Enjoy a short walk along Italowie Gorge. In the afternoon there is a choice of activities: Option one – Artefact making, make your own clapping sticks or boomerang to take home as a souvenir. Option two – Climb Iga Warta Hill – an energetic climb to the top will give you a birds eye view of Iga Warta and views of the surrounding Ranges as far as Lake Frome (four hours return journey). Option three – Nguthunanga Mai Ambatanha (Damper Hill) Tour – visit this women’s site to hear the story and learn about traditional and contemporary issues from a woman’s perspective including the moiety system.
. Day Five – Depart for Adelaide via Leigh Creek and Parachilna. We take a scenic drive through Brachina Gorge and Flinders Ranges National Park, stopping for morning tea en route.
