Dartmoor Homestead, Naracoorte
Dartmoor Homestead (circa 1880) is a truly magnificent property. Set on three acres, just one kilometre from Naracoorte town centre, this gracious and historical property, built in four stages between 1842 and 1890, has now been extensively renovated to provide a unique bed and breakfast experience, but still retains all of its old character. These are some of the oldest stone buildings in South Australia’s southeast and the man who built them played a key role in opening up of much of the area around Naracoorte. They were built by George Ormerod who came from the Lakes District in England in 1840. Initially, Ormerod lived in a reed hut on the banks of the Naracoorte Creek but later built the first stone settlers cottage to house his new wife and family. Eventually it was to become the bakery for the early villagers of Naracoorte. Further additions were made, including what is now known as ‘The Bachelors Hall’ which, it is believed, was used to house the single stockman.
The homestead consists of three suites, which share a superlative heritage sitting room, with an open marble fireplace, antiques, gilt mirror, richly furnished with French fabrics.
Two of the rooms have been adorned with beautiful four-poster beds and the third room has its own unique Roman flavour. The latter Apollo is regally adorned in black and gold, with warmth stemming from the turned wood of the ‘Poetry Bed’. It blends an executive, masculine flair with romance.
Artemis the main bedroom is lavished with passionate red roses embroidered on top of crisp white linen. This romantic space is comfortably designed with a king size bed, a Chaise lounge and an unobtrusive ensuite. This room is a slice of Heaven for those who seriously want to escape and indulge.
Venus the third room in the house also encapsulates the romance of a rose in bloom. As the western afternoon sun streams through the window, the room magically transforms into a luxurious retreat from the world.
There is also a circa 1842 cottage that has been restored to reveal its original charm and character. This enchanting self contained cottage includes a bedroom and comfy living room with a cosy fireplace, which will ensure that your stay is memorable. Come and experience a magical step back in time and curl up in front of the fire with your favourite person, book, beverage – or all three.
Whether you are travelling the Great Ocean Road, or doing the Grampians between Adelaide and Melbourne, or just want to visit the wineries of Coonawarra and Padthaway or the world heritage listed Naracoorte Caves, Dartmoor Homestead offers superior accommodation for you to indulge in.
