Karumba is a popular tourist destination at the mouth of the Norman River, where the outback meets the sea, the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is the only town on the coast serviced by a bitumen road. It is linked via the Savannah Way from Cairns” data-wpil-keyword-link=”linked”>Cairns, the Matilda Highway from the south and the Barkley Highway from the west. It is serviced by bus twice a week and by air thrice a week. Also, there is a weekly car ferry to Weipa.

It is a major port for industries such as prawns, fish, crabs, cattle and Pasminco Century Mine’s zinc exports. Surrounding lush wetlands extends inland 30 kilometres made up of salt water tidal estuaries and creeks which are the habitat of saltwater crocodiles and a vast array of wildlife, such as birds, both migratory and native, many species of fish and animals.

Pelicans Inn is built on a unique historical site overlooking the river with a 180 degree view, sea breezes and immediately adjacent to WWII Catalina and Empire Flying boat ramp. The landscaped pool area and shaded timber deck directly overlook both views.

Guests can choose from self contained units, double rooms with ensuite and balcony, twin share and bunk rooms.
