Abbey of the Roses (formerly Our Sisters of Mercy Convent – Our Lady of Assumption) was built in 1893 from local Sandstone, costing approximately 12,000 pounds and was funded by the people of Warwick through an Art Union.

The Convent catered for the education of young Catholic women for nearly a century. With the advent of school transport systems in the 1960s, the need for boarding accommodation declined. The last of the school’s boarders left in 1972. Sisters in residence also declined and in 1987 the Order of the Sisters of Mercy decided to sell the property.

Our Lady of Assumption College was purchased by Sophia College Trust in 1989 and was renamed Sophia College. The Trust provided tertiary education until December 1993, when it was forced to close. The property was then purchased on October 27 1994.

Following an extensive repair and restorative effort, the building was brought back to as close to original as possible, and opened in 1995 as a function centre.

Glasshouse Mountains

The Glasshouse Mountains in the hinterland of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast are actually the cores of 20 million year old volcanoes. The sides of the volcanoes have eroded away leaving only the hardened rock spiremountain cores we see today. Learn more about this awe-inspiring landscape.
