Wauchope, NT
Wauchope is a popular stop for travellers between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. The famous Wauchope Roadhouse and Pub is located 114 kilometres south of Tennant Creek on the eastern side of the Stuart Highway (Explorer’s Way) between Barrow Creek and Wycliffe Well.
It was built in 1938 to service the needs of the nearby wolfram mines and is full of memorabilia from that era. Wolfram is a mineral used to make tungsten, a very strong metal that is used in light globe filaments although no longer mined in the area.
Wauchope is convenient to one of the Tennant Creek Area’s star attractions, Karlu Karlu/Devils Marbles (see video above- 2:56), thousands of huge, precariously balanced boulders the local Aboriginal people believe are the eggs of the Dreamtime’s Rainbow Serpent is situated just eight kilometres north.
The Wauchope pub now serves as a hotel and rest stop for passers through. It has air conditioned suites, a swimming pool, bicycle hire and a fully licensed restaurant.
