Guide to Morven Queensland Australia

Morven is a town of about 200 people on the Warrego Highway, 90 kilometres east of Charleville, where the Landsborough Highway branches north-west towards Augathella and Longreach. It began as a coach stop, and it is still a place where travellers pull in.

Things To Do in Morven

Morven Historical Museum

The museum is known for a set of miniature buildings made by a local man, showing the homesteads, woolsheds and shops of the district in fine detail, and for a hut made of flattened kerosene tins of the kind that housed families in the Depression.

Tregole National Park

Eleven kilometres south, a short walk leads through a stand of ooline, a rainforest tree left over from wetter ages that now survives in only a few dry inland pockets. There is a picnic area and no camping.

Sadleir’s Waterhole

The waterhole on the edge of town was the original coach stop, and a rest area there allows short-stay camping.

There is a motel, a small caravan and camping area at the recreation ground, and the waterhole rest area.

Eat & Drink

The town’s old hotel burned down in 2016 and the community built a new pub to replace it. There is also a roadhouse.

History

This is the country of the Bidjara and Gunggari peoples. A settlement grew at the waterhole in the 1850s and 1860s on the mail route west, and the railway arrived in 1887.

Getting to Morven

Morven is on the Warrego Highway, an hour east of Charleville and 90 kilometres west of Mitchell. The Westlander train stops by request.
