Jarrahwood, WA

For those drawn to Western Australia’s lesser-known locales, Jarrahwood offers a unique step back in time. Located just 240 kilometers south of Perth, this historic timber town sits quietly between Busselton and Nannup, surrounded by jarrah forests and steeped in early 20th-century charm.

Known For

  • Rich timber milling history
  • Proximity to jarrah forests
  • Authentic early 20th-century architecture

Jarrahwood owes its name and origins to the Jarrah Wood and Saw Mills Company, which played a pivotal role in its establishment. The town grew around a private railway that transported timber from the local mills to the coast, a lifeline for the region’s economy in the early 1900s. In 1932, Jarrahwood was officially gazetted, marking its place in the state’s map as a bustling hub for timber milling.

Although the local mill ceased operations in 1982, much of the town’s original character remains. Strolling through Jarrahwood today, visitors will find gable-roofed timber cottages and weatherboard homes that echo the lifestyles of those who once lived here during its prime.

Encircled by expansive jarrah forests, the town is a gateway to Western Australia’s rich biodiversity. The nearby forests provide a tranquil retreat for birdwatching, bushwalking, or simply soaking in the serene environment. The scent of eucalyptus and the sight of towering jarrah trees make this a sensory escape for urban dwellers seeking a connection with nature.

For adventurers, the Munda Biddi Trail—a world-class, off-road cycling path—passes near Jarrahwood, offering a scenic route through the forested landscape. It’s an ideal way to experience the area’s natural beauty up close.

While Jarrahwood itself doesn’t offer accommodation, nearby towns like Busselton and Nannup provide comfortable places to stay. In Busselton, choices range from family-friendly resorts to boutique bed-and-breakfasts. Nannup, with its quaint and artistic vibe, offers cozy cottages and guesthouses that pair perfectly with the region’s laid-back atmosphere.

Dining opportunities are similarly found in Busselton or Nannup. Busselton boasts a range of eateries, from beachside cafés serving fresh seafood to more sophisticated restaurants offering modern Australian cuisine. In Nannup, small cafes and bakeries offer home-cooked meals, freshly baked goods, and locally roasted coffee, perfect for refueling after exploring the region.

Jarrahwood is more than a relic of the past; it remains a small but vibrant community. With only a handful of permanent residents, the town is a reminder of the close-knit neighborhoods that once thrived here. While modern amenities are sparse, the town’s simplicity and quiet make it a unique place to visit.
