Green Head is a small seaside village on Indian Ocean Drive, about 285 km north of Perth. It is known for Dynamite Bay, an almost circular sheltered bay of white sand and turquoise water, and for the chance to snorkel with Australian sea lions at the nearby Fisherman Islands. A walking trail links three bays along the coast, and national parks inland burst with wildflowers in spring.

This is Yued Noongar country. Green Head began as a lobster fishing village in the 1950s and is now a peaceful holiday spot with a caravan park, cafes and an eco campsite.

Three Bays Walkway

The 2.8 km Three Bays Walkway links Dynamite Bay, South Bay and Anchorage Bay, with views along the coast.

Sea lion snorkel tours

Half-day charters visit the sea lion colony at the Fisherman Islands from about September to May, with snorkel gear available. Bookings are essential, and tours usually pause in August during the mating season.

Surfing and windsurfing

Point Louise has a reef surf break, and the summer sea breezes suit windsurfing.

Fishing

Fish from the jetty or launch a boat from the protected ramp.

Wildflower parks

Alexander Morrison National Park, inland on the Coorow Green Head Road, is full of wildflowers from late July to late October, and Lesueur National Park to the south has walks such as the Gairdner Loop and the climb up Mount Lesueur.

Where To Stay

Green Head Caravan Park on Green Head Road has powered and unpowered sites, drive-through sites and cabins, with beach access. The Milligan Island Eco Campsite, off the road towards Leeman, has 35 sites for self-sufficient rigs with no water or power and no fires, booked through the Shire of Coorow. Centrebreak Beach Stay is close to Dynamite Bay. There is a free dump point in town, and fuel is in Leeman and Jurien Bay.

Eat & Drink

The Green Head Gallery Cafe and the Dynamite Diner, known for its salt and pepper squid, are popular for a meal, and the Osprey Bar and Lounge is the place for a drink. The general store has groceries and a bottle shop.

History

In 1658 the Dutch sailor Abraham Leeman and his crew were stranded on Fisherman Island while searching for survivors of the Gilt Dragon. A lobster fishing village grew at Green Head from the 1950s.

Green Head is on Indian Ocean Drive, about 285 km north of Perth, around three hours’ drive, and about 140 km south of Geraldton.

The best time to visit is September to May for sea lion tours, and July to October for wildflowers. Summer afternoons are good for windsurfing.
