Drummond Cove is a quiet beachside suburb about 10 km north of Geraldton, just off the North West Coastal Highway. A reef shelters its small cove, making it a pleasant spot for a swim or snorkel, and the beach curves north for about 2.5 km to the mouth of the Buller River, backed by large sand dunes.

This is Yamatji country. Drummond Cove is a popular base for travellers visiting Geraldton, thanks to its holiday park set in bushland, and it is close to the windsurfing and camping beach at Coronation Beach further north.

Things To Do in Drummond Cove

Swim and snorkel

The reef-protected cove is calm on most days, good for a swim or snorkel. In bigger swell, watch for rips.

Walk to the Buller River

Walk or drive a 4WD along the beach to the Buller River mouth, about 4 km north, past the dunes.

Fishing and water sports

The beach is good for fishing, and the strong summer sea breezes suit windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Coronation Beach

About 15 km north, Coronation Beach is a well-known windsurfing spot with a camping area.

Geraldton

The city’s museums, memorial, beaches and restaurants are just 10 minutes away.

When To Visit

Drummond Cove is pleasant all year. Summer brings hot days and strong afternoon southerly winds, perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing but blustery on the beach, so swim and snorkel in the calmer mornings. Spring, from August to October, is lovely for wildflowers inland and mild beach weather, and autumn often has the most settled days of the year. Winter is cooler and wetter, but still mild compared with the south of the state.

Where To Stay

Drummond Cove Holiday Park, on the North West Coastal Highway, has powered and unpowered sites, a big unpowered bush area, units, a pool, a playground, a shop and a liquor store, and is pet friendly. The Batten Hall car park at Drummond Cove has a few overnight bays for RVs with toilets. Roads are sealed, and fuel and full services are in Geraldton.

Eat & Drink

The holiday park has a deli and bottle shop. For cafes and restaurants, Geraldton is a short drive away.

History

Drummond Cove began as a small settlement of holiday shacks and grew into a quiet suburb of Geraldton in the later 1900s. It is now part of the City of Greater Geraldton.

Drummond Cove is about 10 km north of Geraldton, around 10 minutes’ drive, and about 435 km north of Perth.

The best time to visit is spring for wildflowers, or summer for wind sports.
