Guide to Urandangi Queensland Australia

Urandangi is a settlement of a handful of people on the Georgina River, about 190 kilometres south-west of Mount Isa and close to the Northern Territory border. It is one of the most isolated places in Queensland that still appears on a map as a town.

In its early days Urandangi was a busy stop on the stock route from the Territory, with hotels, stores and a police station. Almost nothing of that remains. The settlement’s pub, long its only business, was badly damaged by flooding in 2023. Ask in Mount Isa or Dajarra what is open before you go, and assume that nothing is.

The river has shady waterholes that hold yellowbelly and attract birds, and travellers camp along it in the dry season.

Bush camping by the river is the only option. Be fully self-sufficient.

History

This is the country of the Waluwarra and Bularnu peoples. The township was established in the 1880s on the Georgina stock route.

Getting to Urandangi

Gravel roads lead from Mount Isa and from Dajarra. They are rough, remote and closed after rain, and there is no phone coverage. Tell someone your plans.
