Jericho is a town of about a hundred people on the Capricorn Highway, 85 kilometres east of Barcaldine. It stands on the Jordan River, and both names were someone’s joke in the 1880s.

Things To Do in Jericho

Jericho Drive-In

The drive-in has room for about 36 cars and a few rows of seats, and still screens films about once a month. It is run by volunteers.

The Crystal Trumpeters

A sculpture in the main street tells the biblical story of the fall of Jericho with crystals and local stone.

Redbank Park

On the bank of the Jordan River, the park has free or low-cost camping, a swimming hole and good birdwatching.

History

This is the country of the Iningai people. Jericho was a railway town from 1885, and for a time a branch line ran south to Blackall and Yaraka.

Jericho is on the Capricorn Highway between Alpha and Barcaldine, and the Spirit of the Outback train stops here.
