Gidgegannup is a rural district in the Perth Hills, about 42 km north-east of the CBD and around 45 minutes’ drive along Toodyay Road. Its large bush blocks and hobby farms have kept much of the native woodland, and it’s a pleasant drive for wildflowers, a pub lunch beside a waterfall or the annual show.

The name comes from a Noongar word said to mean a place where spears are made, recorded by surveyors in 1852. About 2,800 people live here, in the City of Swan, on Whadjuk Noongar country.

Things To Do in Gidgegannup

Noble Falls

Opposite the Noble Falls Tavern on Toodyay Road, the falls on Wooroloo Brook have picnic areas and walk trails and are best in winter and spring when the brook is flowing.

Wildflower Scenic Drive

The Gidgegannup Wildflower Scenic Drive follows O’Brien, Clenton, Berry and Reen roads, with a walk trail, and F R Berry Reserve is another good spot for spring wildflowers.

Walk Trails

The Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary has walk trails through woodland, and the Quenda Trail, Numbat Trail and Possum Loop are easy local walks.

Gidge Show

The Gidgegannup Agricultural Show, held at the showgrounds on Toodyay Road on the last Saturday of October, celebrated its 80th show in 2026.

Small Farm Field Day

Each May the Small Farm Field Day, together with honey and olive festivals, draws thousands of visitors to the showgrounds.

Walyunga National Park

West of the district, Walyunga National Park follows the Avon River through rapids that are part of the Avon Descent race in August.

Seasons

Gidgegannup is greenest from June to October, when Wooroloo Brook flows over Noble Falls and the paddocks are lush, and spring brings wildflowers along the scenic drives.

Where To Stay

Unyoked tiny cabins, which welcome dogs, and Jacaranda Farm Cottage offer stays among the bush. There’s no caravan park in Gidgegannup; the nearest powered sites are at Lake Leschenaultia in Chidlow, about 15 km away, or in the Swan Valley. Toodyay Road is sealed but hilly and busy with trucks.

Eat & Drink

The Noble Falls Tavern has a sports bar, restaurant and dog-friendly beer garden on a verandah over the falls reserve, with live music. Gidgegannup also has a local store and bakery.

History

The name was recorded by surveyors in 1852. The district developed as farming land, and its large rural lots kept much of the native vegetation. The Noble Falls Tavern dates from 1962. In February 2021 the Wooroloo bushfire burnt about 11,000 hectares and destroyed 86 homes, most of them in the Tilden Park area of Gidgegannup.

Gidgegannup is about 42 km from Perth, around 45 minutes’ drive via Toodyay Road, and 23 km from Midland. There’s limited public transport.
