Guide to Bundanoon New South Wales Australia

Bundanoon is a village at the southern end of the Southern Highlands, perched on the rim of the gorges of Morton National Park. In the early 1900s it had more guesthouses than anywhere in the state outside the Blue Mountains, and it is still a place people come to walk, cycle and breathe cold air.

Things To Do in Bundanoon

Morton National Park

The park begins at the end of the village streets. A loop road links a series of lookouts over the sandstone gorges, among them Echo Point, the Grand Canyon lookout and Beauchamp Cliffs, and tracks lead to Fairy Bower Falls and down into the valleys. A vehicle fee applies at the park gate.

Glow Worm Glen

A track of about half an hour from the end of William Street leads to a sandstone grotto that lights up with glow worms after dark. Take a torch for the walk and turn it off when you arrive.

Cycling

Quiet lanes and park roads have long made Bundanoon a cycling village, and bikes can be hired locally.

Brigadoon

Each April the village becomes Brigadoon for a day of pipe bands, caber tossing, Scottish dancing and stalls that draws many thousands of visitors. A winter festival is held in July.

Bundanoon has guesthouses, a country hotel, motels, cottages and a youth hostel.

The main street has cafes, a pub and a few restaurants.

History

The railway arrived in 1868 and brought timber getters, then tourists. In 2009 Bundanoon made headlines as the first town in the world to stop selling bottled water, installing free drinking fountains instead.

Getting to Bundanoon

Bundanoon is about two hours from Sydney by the Hume Motorway and the Illawarra Highway. It has a station on the Southern Highlands Line.
