Hinterland Tours
Hinterland Tours offers both outstanding one-day walks and overnight bushwalking/trekking tours in the National Parks of the New South Wales mid-north coast in undisturbed and remote wilderness, whose beauty can only be experienced by walking in it.
We invite you to share a journey with us into the moist refuges along the Great Eastern Escarpment, recognised for their world conservation significance as the World Heritage Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia. We also visit a range of other landscapes, from high granite tors to a deep wilderness gorge, and from tall, ‘old growth’ eucalypt forest to open woodland and heath. These diverse habitats are home to one of the largest fauna diversities in Australia.
Our tour guides are experienced bush experts who enhance your nature experience with their profound botanical, ecological, cultural and natural-historical knowledge about the places we visit. We are committed to minimal impact bushwalking and are proud to be currently the only bushwalking tour operator in the region licensed by National Parks & Wildlife Service for some trackless tours in World Heritage listed wilderness areas. We have gained Eco Tourism Certification for a number of our tours. We facilitate your bush experience by providing suitable camping equipment, 4WD transport to the starting point of the walk, transport to and from Kempsey and Coffs Harbour on the Pacific Highway, healthy and tasty breakfasts and dinners, and informative trip notes ahead of the booked tour.
The trips are distinguished in different grades, so everyone can book a suitable tour to maximise the enjoyment. Walk with us in the rainforests of northern New South Wales where day tourists never venture!
Touring Options
Green Outback
The tour is a journey along the Pacific Coastline, but with a chance to experience a few days in what we call the Green Outback. By this we mean the Great Escarpment, a gigantic green wall where the land plunges down gorges and ravines to the coastal plains. Deep rainforest canyons and solitary wilderness give an idea of an Australia as it was known by the indigenous people before the arrival of European and other cultures.
The National Parks we explore are listed as World Heritage due to their uniqueness and high conservation significance. We guide our clients on easy day walks, mostly of 2 to 4 hours, sometimes with an option to extend the walk to 6 hours.
Small groups of 4 to 8 participants, selected accommodation and most meals included
Dorrigo NP day walks
We offer a choice of 3 one-day walks in Dorrigo NP, providing transport, lunch pack, and expert guidance.
#1 Gleniffer Gorge: Walking upstream in and along the boulder strewn Never Never Creek is particularly pleasant on a hot summer’s day. We pass numerous picturesque pools set amongst bangalow palms and lowland rainforest, offering opportunities for a refreshing swim. The walk is easy and is offered over the warmer months when creek levels are low.
#2 Blackbutt Track & Cedar Falls: Walking in eucalypt and warm temperate rainforest, we pass several waterfalls. The walk is medium and involves one short steep climb.
#3 Killlungoondie Plains & Lanes Lookout: This walk leads us into a remote part of Dorrigo NP, through native grass land, a rarity in Australia after 200 years of grazing. Entering the mystical cool temperate rainforest with its Antarctic beaches is like entering another world. The walk is easy to medium.
South Plateau Highlights
This tour provides an introduction to the enormous variety of the National Parks of the region. From eucalypt woodlands and granite boulders in Cathedral Rocks National Park, to the rich subtropical rainforests of Dorrigo National Park and the undisturbed wilderness of the rugged New England National Park – impressions to stay with you. Dorrigo National Park and New England National Park are on the World Heritage list of the UNESCO. We can drive to all campsites and hence enjoy the walks with a light daypack. Al walks are on good tracks.
