Guide to Cheepie Queensland Australia

Cheepie is the remains of a railway township a few kilometres off the road between Charleville and Quilpie, about 75 kilometres east of Quilpie. One or two people still live here among empty buildings and red dust.

There are no services of any kind. Visitors come for half an hour to walk around and read the signs that explain what stood where.

Things To Do in Cheepie

Walk the township

For a few years from 1914 Cheepie was the end of the western line and a lively place, with hotels, stores, a school and a Cobb and Co depot carrying passengers on to the far west. When the railway moved on to Quilpie the town faded. The old post office and a handful of other buildings survive.

Where To Stay

There is nowhere to stay. Quilpie and Charleville have motels and caravan parks.

Nothing is available.

History

This is the country of the Mardigan people. The last store closed decades ago, and trains now pass only occasionally.

Getting to Cheepie

Turn off the sealed Diamantina Developmental Road at the sign and follow a short gravel road. It is impassable when wet.
