Australia’s Top Beaches
It’s difficult to name the best of Australia’s beaches. Beaches are what Australia do best. Australia’s coastline stretches for nearly 37,000 kilometers, across which there are approximately 11,000 beaches. But it is possible to help direct you to some really beautiful spots, each for different attractions. Here are three that we recommend
Bells Beach
This is arguably one of the best surfing beaches in Australia, and is famous internationally. The beach is located 100 km south of Melbourne, on the Great Ocean Road, near the towns of Torquay and Jean Juc. Everything about Bells beach and the surrounding town is geared towards surfing—the shops, the bars and the people. The beach is also home to the world’s longest running surf festival—the Rip Curl Pro and Music Festival, which takes place every year and is amazing to watch.
Hyams Beach, New South Wales, Australia
This beach, just three hours south of Sydney on the pristine south coast of New South Wales, is said to have the whitest sand in the world. A small and unspoilt seaside village on the southern shores of Jervis Bay within Booderee National Park, Hyams beach is also known as having the clearest water in Australia. You can see kangaroos on the beach, as well as the occasional dolphin, especially in the mornings. The exceptionally clear waters are perfect for swimming, fishing, snorkelling and diving. It’s possible to hire a beach cottage, so you can sit on deck, kick back and relax, and watch the lorikeets feed.
West Coast Eyre
This is less of a beach stop and more of a beautiful coastal spot to drive across, and stop off for swims when you please. The Eyre Peninsula’s West Coast runs along the Flinders Highway from the tip to the Eyre Peninsula at Coffin bay. Along it are gorgeous bays and inlets leading to Ceduna. From here, the highway will take you to dramatic cliffs and through vast, stunning desert toward the West Australian border. You really do feel like you’re in another world in this exotic terrain.
