Mackerel Islands, Onslow

Whether it’s diving, fishing, turtle and whale watching, bird watching or just plain relaxing, the Mackerel Islands in Western Australia’s spectacular Pilbara region are an ideal destination for the adventurous or the weary.

It’s no secret that Exmouth is a diver’s paradise. But what remains on the hush is that the quality diving extends further north to the Mackerels, where you’ve got world-class diving but without the crowds.

The pristine tropical waters are teeming with life. From small nudibranchs, to myriad fish of all sizes, turtles in their thousands and a variety of ever-majestic sharks – there’s something to suit all types of divers and snorkellers.

Fishing is also up there with some of the best in the country. Whether you like to bottom bounce for your dinner, or tag and release for sport, the waters around the Mackerels have it all. Touted by Fishing WA’s Steve Correia as a new GT (giant trevally) Mecca, the Mackerels boast areas where 70 pound GTs are lurking in two-metres of water, just waiting to attack a popper.

Some of the finer fish on offer include coral trout, Spanish mackerel, red and spangled emperor, yellowfin tuna, sailfish and black marlin. Those who prefer to stay on land will also be able to catch some impressive fish off the jetty and beach, including queenfish and mangrove jack.

Nature lovers are not forgotten at the Mackerels, with plenty of natural wonders to take in. Watching turtles lay their eggs on the beach is a highlight, followed by baby turtles hatching. Dolphins, whales, dugongs and rays are also regular inhabitants of the waters and it’s rare to have a day out on the water without seeing some of these gentle ocean dwellers.

Accommodation is available on two islands. Thevenard Island offers beach cabins that sleep up to 10 people, as well as Club Thevenard accommodation village with single, twin and double rooms. Direction Island has only one beach cabin which sleeps up to eight people – have the island to yourself!

Glasshouse Mountains

The Glasshouse Mountains in the hinterland of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast are actually the cores of 20 million year old volcanoes. The sides of the volcanoes have eroded away leaving only the hardened rock spiremountain cores we see today. Learn more about this awe-inspiring landscape.
