Clovelly House – An award winning Bed and Breakfast of elegance and charm. Perched on a landscaped hill overlooking Metung and the waters of Bancroft Bay this lovingly restored home dates back to 1881 when Essington King (grandson of Phillip Gidley King, third Governor of the Colony of New South Wales) took up the land and built a form of his charming old home in Devon. Sold to Dr Alfred William Howitt in 1886, perhaps East Gippsland’s most renowned identity, it remained in this famous explorer and scientist’s family through his daughter Maude until 1956. The 1.3 acres remaining of the original gardens feature some very old shrubs and trees. Guests have a choice of one of three luxurious suites or the magnificent garden cottage. Each in-house room features queen size beds, huge en-suites with twin spas, separate showers and atriums complete with ferns and tropical plants. The garden cottage features a sitting room with full length windows overlooking a private verandah, a queen size bedroom and elegant bathroom with a double spa and separate shower. The cottage sitting room has a wood fire and television/VCR. In-house guests enjoy a wonderful guest lounge with a wood fire and majestic views over Bancroft Bay. Gourmet breakfasts are a feature at Clovelly House, normally taken on the wide sun-drenched verandah with the wild birds for company. The ever changing menu uses local produce whenever possible. There are two restaurants, a waterside pub, regular lake cruises and hire boats in the village, just 200 metres from Clovelly House.
